I went up to the Little River Ferry Terminal (Comox) this afternoon and saw the swallows in the bird house there. Here are a few photos. I am not sure if they are violet-green swallows. You can't really see underneath the wings on the adult, so you can't see if there are violet feathers underneath or not.

An easy identifier is the green, male Tree Swallows are only blue & white. Violet-Green Swallows are the only swallows in North America that have green feathers.

Roger Tory Peterson's Guide describes the tree swallow as being steely blue "tinged with green." This is where my confusion came from. Thanks.

Another clue is the white on the face extends above the eye.
