I saw several of these ducks from a beach south of Campbell River today. The colouration doesn't match up with photos I see, but I think it looks like a merganser. Could it be a nonbreeeding colouration? Is this a female? Thanks in advance.

I'd say Red-Breasted Merganser young male or adult male transitioning into eclipse plumage. Notice the black feathers around the face.

Thank you both. I wonder how these ducks got the name red-breasted. I don't see any sign of red breasts.

Adult males have a chestnut tone on the breast below the neck, though it may appear redder or lighter depending on lighting.
