I filmed this interaction between western grebes a few weeks back in Salmon Arm. I have read that the rushing ceremony can either be a courting couple or two males competing for the attention of the females. Is there any way of telling (by appearance or behavior) which this is? And what about the third bird that pokes its beak into the affair at the end? It's quite smaller than the other two. Is that a younger male? I can't imagine a female would meddle in between other birds like that. (I have labelled the video as if this were a courting couple, but youtube allows titles to be changed if need be.) Thanks in advance for any help. And sorry for such a long video just for a little rush along the water at the end...
