Hi all,

Another puzzler for someone. This guy chased a bird into the tree outside my house (Vancouver). I remember him/her being very small, but I'm an awful judge of size. In the first picture he looks decidedly Cooper's Hawk-like, but I would have sworn he was much too small.

Any ideas? (Sorry for the awful shots!)

- Ben

I think this is a juvenile Cooper`s Hawk (white spots on back, brownish head) It could be a male they are smaller (9-11 inches)

Looks like a Sharp Shinned Hawk, juvenile. The head, especially, looks smaller and the bill looks dainty, compared to Cooper's. They commonly chase birds in around feeders.

Yes, the beak does seem a little small, hey? The reason I didn't think it was a Cooper's (even though it's the spitting image), was that last year a Cooper's caught a rat right outside the same window and ate it, much to my disgust and delight. Looking over the photographs, this bird was definitely a lot smaller.

Interesting to know the male is smaller, though.

Thanks!

- Ben
