In winter time I usually saw brownish colored Northern Harriers (females or/and young males), but from March I saw only light colored adult males. (Around Vancouver.. Boundary Bay (Delta), Surrey, Richmond)

I know some of them local and stay, and some of them migrate.

Anybody know the reason why I could not see adult males (or it was only accidentally) during winter? And why I can not see any females during the last 2-3 months?

Thanks!!!!

My only thought as to why females might be harder to spot this time of year is that they're incubating eggs while the males perform much of the hunting, making them appear more visible. A friend living in Alberta has seen a male harrier hunting his field for months and acting erratically around potential threats, he's never seen a female this whole time but I'm sure she's tucked away nearby.
As for no males in winter, I'm not sure, some years I see lots of one sex or the other. Last year in Victoria I only saw males, but the year prior I spotted many females and juveniles.
