Nesting season is almost here and expect activity to start as soon as the weather warms. Time to setup or clean up those next boxes.

Here are some Tips:
  • If you are buying or building a new nest box, match to the box to the species you desire but also match it to species that are likely to be at your home and likely to successfully nest in the box.
  • If you are building a box, use untreated wood and galvanized screws.
  • No birdhouse perches, cut them off.
  • Check the hole size for the target species the box was designed for or modify it to the correct size you are targetting. For an old box, if the hole is been enlarged, you can mount a new opening overtop. Correct hole size helps to keep out predictor species.
  • Give the bird box a good clean... remove old nesting debris. Sanitize with soap and water and a bit of bleach. Check the ventilation and drainage holes, make sure they are clear and drainage works. Dry in the sun before mounting.
  • Check the location guide for optimal box placement. My boxes are tight against the house and soffit and that allows them to be high up, dry, and house sparrows have no where to land near them except on the roof.
