The Royal Canadian Geographical Society wanted the grey jay recognized, but that isn't happening says the government. Click the CBC article below. Talked to some jays about it - They are like "what the ...???" and are very very unhappy!!!

I find it very strange that the The Royal Canadian Geographical Society did not approach the federal government about this.

How else do you get a federal bird?

The government and Minister were well aware of it as they were of the entire contest but as the society says, "...the geographic society never pressed the government directly because it's a not-for-profit organization and lobbying Ottawa could jeopardize its status."

I think the government missed a real opportunity here and they may end up regretting it. But the Canadian people had a lot of fun on a great contest and as far as I am concerned they have made their choice regrdless of what the bureaucrats and politicians may think. Yeah for the Jay!
