Is this baby old enough to be out of the nest or should I put it back in?

If the bird has let the nest, it is probably getting ready to fly. Some fledgling birds spend a a day or two on the ground before doing learning to fly.

When young birds first fledge, they spend some time on the ground.
But don't worry, as this is normal and the parent birds are looking after it.
So leave the young bird and it will be OK.
