Hello Mel or anyone else:

My friend and I are hoping to hit Victoria this Friday, March 4th, looking for the Redwing. It will be a Lifer for us. Please report any sightings of this bird so we can gauge if our trip will be worth it. Thank you!

FYI... I saw yesterday on the eBird alert that the current best place to find the redwing is down the lane. Apparently I've been staking out the wrong place. Better luck tomorrow.

Directions for the current site are: Park at the empty lot. Walk north and turn right (east) down the first side road/lane. Turn again at the T down the lane behind the houses. Across from units 3 and 4 there is a fruiting holly tree and behind it are large trees with extensive vines with black berries (sounds maybe like fruiting ivy?). Look in this area.

Yes Christina that's where I had him too and where he has been most days now.

3957 south valley drive park there and walk in the lane behind the townhouses and you can't miss the holly and vines there.

Good luck
Mel

Hello fellow birders:

On March 4th, my friend and I saw the Redwing at 10am and around 5pm. We saw it not in the Holly bushes but with robins and varied thrushes high up in the Garry Oaks at the end of the lane. Look for it there too. We would have liked to see them a little closed but still got good looks and photos where we observed it. Good luck!

On March 20th Jeremy Gatten had the Redwing singing off Wilkinson Rd and South Valley Drive. What a treat!

Brian Stech had the Redwing today on the holly in the lane accessed at 3957 South Valley Drive. He said it was singing for an hour.

He got a couple beautiful photos of it.

If anyone goes over Sky Larks are singing now so that's an extra bonus because they tend to be easier to see.

He got a nice photo of one of them in flight at the bulb fields at 8277 Central Saanich Rd and he also had some at the airport at Canso and Canora.
