There is a probable 1st cycle Purple Sandpiper in Victoria. The bird has been present for two days now. It was first found by Jeremy Gatten on friday at 3:45pm at Kitty Islet and then refound off the Vancouver Island Golf Course on Sat by Daniel Donnecke. It's not confirmed yet but appears to be an excellent candidate for BC's first record. You may want to twitch it to be safe before it dissapears. I have sent it to some prominent east coast birders and waiting to hear from them. Also it's been sent to some on the Pacific who also believe it's a PUSA.

Photos can be viewed here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S33323094

Just a reminder that I am not saying it is a PUSA because we can't be sure at this time. However, this is an extremely good candidate for Purple.

It is extremely difficult to distinguish these two species in winter plumage. We really need some flight shots and nice full frames of the bird standing to truly evaluate the primaries/secondaries.

Great way to start off 2017 regardless.

Cheers,
Mel

Here is an interesting article on how to tell ROSAs and PUSAs apart:

http://www.martinreid.com/Main%20websit ... piper.html

There is only confirmed record on the Pacific in California thus far.

Cheers,
Mel

Several people looked today but did not relocate the bird. There is a good chance it's still in the area and your best bet to look is on a very high tide.

Here is the only official confirmed record of Purple Sandpiper on the Pacific Coast:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S29211967

As you can see it's a bird into its alternate moult, which makes identification much easier.

Cheers,
Mel

Mike Bentley refound and photographed the PUSA today at Kitty Islet! Hopefully he got a wing shot.

Cheers,
Mel

Liam Singh et al. just got the probable PUSA before it flew to Trial Island. Will post some photos later today.

Bird was last seen at Kitty Islet at 3:30pm before it flew to Trial by Cathy Reader et al. She was also able to get flight shots hopefully we have something diagnostic soon.

Great to hear so many got to see it today.

Cheers,
Mel

Marie O'Shaughnessy got some great shots including a flight shot today.

Looks narrower than what I'd expect to see in ROSA. What is important is if the white of the outer web of the inner primaries touches the rachus. In these photos we can't truly see that detail due to resolution but it is a sharp photo that shows the relative width of the white bar and extent of white in the primaries. To me it looks like most of the white is in the primary coverts, not primaries. Also only the very inner most secondaries have extensive white. I'd expect Rock Sandpiper to have more. But like I said, I'll defer to those who know PUSA better.

I've passed these on to some experts on both coasts and we will see what they say.

Cheers,
Mel

Six of us came over from Vancouver and Tom Plath, Ilya Povalyaev, Quentin Brown, Mike Tabak and Peter Candido, myself and Mike Bentley from Victoria are currently looking at the bird at 9:40am as it sits on Kitty Islet.

So far the overwhelming response has been that this is most likely a Purple Sandpiper but it is not confirmed yet. Hopefully we get better photos to help aid in the ID confirmation.

Cheers,
Mel

We left the bird today just before 1pm. He was still on Kitty Islet feeding and very close to us. We had brilliant views of this bird and the colours were extremely bright. We got some really good flight shots today and wing spread shots which I believe are diagnostic for PUSA. I will send post the photos our group got today and send these into Peter Pyle and the other experts, who I believe will confirm this as a Purple Sandpiper.

Cheers,
Mel

In the photos above I cannot see any white touching the rachi on the webs of p1-p4. I also can't see white on the outer web of s1. Hence why I believe this to be a Purple Sandpiper.

Click the link below to see a photo of the wing of various Rock Sandpiper subspecies. It is helpful to use this when comparing to the bird photographed above.
