I have white crowned sparrows in my yard. Aren't they supposed to south by now?

I think they may be resident (ie. non-migrating) birds? some areas in the west do get them year round.

Many of the songbirds you see year-round in your yard are actually migrants. The Juncos, White-crowned Sparrows, Robins (for examples) that nested locally have gone south for the winter, and new birds from farther north have moved in to take their place and winter locally. It may thus appear that they are residents, but that is not quite the case. A few of our yardbirds are truly 'resident', such as Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker, and Nuthatches for examples. These may move around with the seasons to change habitat, but they do not make long migrations.
