I participated in the Christmas Bird Count today, covering Fishtrap and Willband Creeks in Abbotsford. Sightings of special interest include a peregrine falcon in a row of tall cottonwoods at Fishtrap, as well as a northern shrike hunting in the wind at Willband.
The shrike can often be seen perched in the elderberry bushes scattered around the creek. Also encountered a photographer who had a picture of a northern harrier from in Willband, though I didn't see it.
Ducks seen throughout the day included green winged teal, gadwall, American Wigeon, mallards, common and hooded mergansers, bufflehead, a few northern shoveler in farmer's fields around the park, and one northern pintail.
Pied-billed grebes and double crested cormorants can also be seen.
