I was out at Iona Beach today and noticed a few Swallows hurtling around. I was puzzled by their appearance. I couldn't figure out what type of Swallow I was seeing and attempted to take a few fly-by shots. From a quick look, it appears that they are Violet-Green ones.

I checked the nest boxes and didn't see any hanging around that area. (Almost 100% of those I have seen at the nest boxes have been Tree Swallows. So maybe Violet-Green is right.)

Is this a reasonable time for them to appear? (February 27)

Some early swallows can appear in February and over the next two weeks, there should be more reports as the swallows begin to arrive. The birds in question could be Tree or Violet-green swallow or even Barn swallow. All three species have been recorded in one place or another in February as far as I know.

Cheers,

A crappy photo of one speeding around a pond at Iona.

Looks like a barn swallow to me based on the true swallow-tail, white on the tail, and buffy breast.

Yep that's a Barn Swallow all-right (note the "swallow-tail"). There have been 5 or 6 Barn Swallows hanging out around Iona since early Feb.

There have also been sightings of both Tree and Violet-green this month so both are possible.
