In April I came across a group of a dozen or so Red-breasted Mergansers swimming along the water line at Pt. Roberts. As I watched a couple of males went into display mode. They made mock charges, put their bodies into contorted positions and made some calls. A couple of females just watched the shenanigans. The males, though, did not attack one another. They just displayed in front of the females. I also thought that the males were bulging out their eyes. Finally the female chose a male and they swam off together, leaving the flock behind.
