Certainly looks like a great find Katherine! They are a very beautiful bird and stand out from the similar Western Bluebird. Nice capture Katherine.

The Lazuli Bunting can be seen near the Community Gardens of Colony Farm.

Hi Dale,

Keep checking in. Colony Farms is one of the very few places in the Lower Mainland where the Lazuli Buntings nests. They are most commonly found in and around the community gardens, or across the road by the forensic hospital.

Thanks Kathy! Likely in early August.

Thanks Katherine and Les. I was near the Community Gardens and also by the area opposite the Forensic place but alas no signs of the bunting. I will try again.

I tracked them down today. Exactly where you said Katherine. They weren't very co-operative, but I did get some captures which will have to suffice, for now.

I have found the secret to finding LAZB is to listen for them singing. I would suggest you find their call online, listen and learn. I lead a Nature Vancouver bird walk at CF in May and July each year and have been successful at finding them most years. This past May we found one within minutes of our start because we heard it singing.

One thing to consider also is their song is strong and sometimes they can be further away from you than you might think.

Very nice pictures Deon! It's too bad that they're so wary of humans, (look at my grainy picture of the Bunting!)
I swear, I've gotta buy a camo t-shirt and khaki pants to wear when I'm birding.

We were at CF yesterday, and some kind soul asked us if we were looking for the bunting. Then she said "Let's just listen for him", and when he sang, she said "That's him, and he's a long way away". What a gracious way to teach us something, so thanks to the good samaritan!

Anyhow, thanks to his persistent singing, we had no problem locating him and his perch. It was the same species of tree as in the photos above.
