Was at the Colony Farm today, lots of bird sightings! Saw a lot of Cedar Waxwings, a couple of Lazuli Buntings, a couple of Western Tanagers and a female Bullock's Oriole. I think I spotted an Eastern kingbird, am i right?

Also found a swallow of sorts, at first i thought it was the Rough-winged swallow, but now I have my doubts, any ideas who this is?

Please ignore the bad qualities of the photos :)

That's a beautiful shot of an Eastern Kingbird, awesome! The second photo is a tricky one, I'm guessing it's a Purple Martin?

The second one is tricky with the lighting but it may be a Northern Rough Winged Swallow. I was at Colony Farm last week and saw a number over the pond. The Kingbird is a great shot.

Thank you all :)
Yes, I think you're right, the last photo is a Northern Rough-winged swallow, saw a few of them by the Community Garden, although it still puzzles me that the breast is so dark on it.

The photo appears to show a notched tail which would lead one to Purple Martin, Northern Rough-winged has a square tail. Just another opinion. I have seen PUMA at CF and most likely they are from the Moody Inlet colony. Did the bird look larger than the other swallows present ?

There was a purple martin using one of the nesting boxes in the river on Sunday that in the light looked quite brown, and not purple. I'd vote for purple martin.

That is a very important observation. I am not aware that the martin boxes have been used in the past but of course that's why they're there. I will be there tomorrow morning for a Colony Farm Park Assoc. walk so will make sure I check it out.

Was observing the Northern Rough-winged today, and took a few pictures.

They look completely different to the swallow in the first picture, so most likely it really was a Purple Martin. Thank you very much for the help in the "identification process" :)

Larry, i was wondering, what is the Moody Inlet colony, and where is it? :) Thank you.

I meant to remember the number of the box, but it's the lowest box on the side of the post away from the pedestrian bridge. The others are being used by swallows.

Hugh, I was wondering, are you sure it was a Purple Martin, could it have possibly been a Starling?

Hi Katherine, the colony is at Rocky Point Park. They nest in the boxes on the dolphins just off the end of the pier.

Photobadger, thanks for making me smile. Reminds me about the joke about the guy who had terrible trouble telling his two horses apart, until he realized that the black one was exactly 2" taller than the white one.
