Greetings,

I am currently working on a group research project in Squamish in a second growth forest near a riparian buffer along Ring creek and the Mamquam river. We are spending 10 minutes each morning sitting in the forest and listening to bird calls and recording them. We are hoping to identify them all as well as observe whether or not the number of species increases over the next two weeks. What we are looking for now is to compile a list of all the species that we are likely to be hearing so that we can learn the songs to pick out the different species. Anyone know what we should be listening for? We already recognize the Winter wren and the Varied Thrush but apart from that we are all new to the birding world and would greatly appreciate help.

Cheers,

I would get a checklist of Vancouver birds.I believe Riefel Bird sanctuary sells them. Then look at the birds most likely for that habitat for the month you are doing the study. Then go to any website that has those calls. There are several. The Cornell Lab one is good and I believe another is called Whatbird. That should do the trick.Another method is hook up with an experienced birder in Van and play the tapes. They could tell you all the birds instantly.Hope this helps.Ted

You can find an online checklist to the greater vancouver birds here: http://www.geog.ubc.ca/biodiversity/efa ... t%20XY.pdf
It also shows what months the birds are common or uncommon in.

A bird checklist is available at the Squamish Adventure Centre for the Squamish Estuary and for the Squamish Area between Porteau Cove and Daisy Lake.

After you figure out which species you are likely to encounter you can use this free website to make a list of the birds. Then play the sounds of those species to match your recordings. It's a Canadian Gov. website. You have to register but it's well worth it for the variety of recordings and pics. Good luck.
