Query female red-breasted merganser?#85632 By mcrosbie - Apr 29 1:03 am - Apr 29 1:03 am #85632 I saw several of these ducks from a beach south of Campbell River today. The colouration doesn't match up with photos I see, but I think it looks like a merganser. Could it be a nonbreeeding colouration? Is this a female? Thanks in advance. DSC00165 by mcrosbie, on Flickr

Re: Query female red-breasted merganser?#85697 By FYLegend - May 03 6:28 pm - May 03 6:28 pm #85697 I'd say Red-Breasted Merganser young male or adult male transitioning into eclipse plumage. Notice the black feathers around the face. Frank Lin (Frankyboy5) https://www.flickr.com/photos/frankyboy5/
Re: Query female red-breasted merganser?#85835 By mcrosbie - May 19 9:46 pm - May 19 9:46 pm #85835 Thank you both. I wonder how these ducks got the name red-breasted. I don't see any sign of red breasts.
Re: Query female red-breasted merganser?#85861 By FYLegend - May 22 6:20 pm - May 22 6:20 pm #85861 Adult males have a chestnut tone on the breast below the neck, though it may appear redder or lighter depending on lighting. Frank Lin (Frankyboy5) https://www.flickr.com/photos/frankyboy5/
