My wife uses a pair of Diamondback Vortex 8 x 42 binoculars while I take pictures with my DSLR with 400 mm lens when we go birding. However, I'm thinking of getting a pair of Diamondback Vortex 10 x 42 binoculars for myself and would love to hear what others like or prefer to use.

I personally prefer 10X42s, just because it gives me the extra length to take a closer look at a distant hawk, details on a shorebird, or just general "closer-in" observation. If you are more of a casual birder, 8X42s can be great, as they give you a wider frame to see more habitat, and see more birds in a flock. It all ends up being personal preference, so pick up which ever one you feel will fit your needs! :D
