A morning's birding on August 11th produced 17 species, including some great looks at birds we rarely see. Grey Catbird and Rufous-sided Towhee abounded, while we were very happy to see Eastern Kingbird chirping loudly from the tops of the trees near the parking lot.
On the lake, Red-necked Grebe, Common Loon, Canada Geese, 2 Redhead and 2 Wood Duck were spotted. In the reeds near the hide were Marsh and House Wren and just behind them in the trees were Black-capped Chickadee and American Goldfinch. 2 singing Common Yellowthroat were seen briefly but well about half way along the boardwalk.
The two highlights of the day, however, were Sora and Virginia Rail. The Sora greeted us on the path into the hide, then was subsequently seen a few times on either side of the boardwalk into the reeds and along the shoreline. The Virginia Rail (juv.) was seen very well for over 30 minutes just behind the hide. It returned to the same patch of trunks time and time again, only going out for short forays before returning again. We felt very lucky to have such good close looks at such a shy bird!
