Have had a pair of Eurasian Collared-Doves hanging around for over a week now. Except I just noticed there were two last night, caught them at a very awkward moment, photo would have been birdy porn. I did take a couple of very very very very bad pics(with my 35mm), just because I was so excited to see the doves again this year.!!!

It can be hard to hear them with the 20 or so Banded-Tail Pigeons at my house each day. Neighbours not so impressed,,,,, they have let off a shot-gun blasts to scare them out of the trees. I figure they do less damage than bears. lol

cheers
so glad the sun has finally arrived.

Nope, not the greatest pictures, but you've certainly conveyed your enthusiasm and I too am excited to hear that they're back!

Thank you for posting the pic of the dove. There has been a couple in Ucluelet for a couple of years now and this spring a pair has taken up residence in Port Alberni. Once I viewed your pic I went to Google and found a site about the dove that had an audio and that is exactly what I am hearing :0) Thanks again

It was interesting to read that you are only just beginning to see these birds. They established themselves in UK in the fifties and are now quite common. We see them in our garden and they are feisty birds. They have stand up fights with the wood pigeons, which we don't mind because those are a real pain, soiling the garden furniture and the cars. I just happened to take a photo of a dove on the bird bath a few days ago

Hi Pam - great pic ty

I got a closer look at the birds the other night - they were eating gravel which they do nightly - and I don't see the collar :0( So maybe they are young ones? Or maybe they are so other kind of dove so I'll keep googling :0)

Thanks again for the pic

I live on the Sunshine Coast and have been a back-yard bird watcher for years. It seems every year my bird visitors are a little different then the previous. For the past several weeks I have had Eurasian Collared Doves visiting my bird feeders. They take flight at as soon as they get wind of me, so it has taken a bit of time for me to get a really good look at them. I kept thinking I must be 'missing something' because I could not find them in my BC bird books. Thanks to this site I am now content that I know what I am looking at. I'm not much of a photographer, so no pictures - but I appreciate yours (even the bad ones!)

I know this comes late but starting in in November of 2000 I had a Eastern Blue Jay as a regular visitor at my feeder for about 3 months. That was pretty special!

Hi Laurie:

They are very nice to listen to. lol now I find myself listening for them everywhere I go :0)

I did get a closer look at my pair and only one of them has a collar so I'm wondering if there is a difference between a male and female.

Thanks again, glad to hear you have the chance to enjoy them.

I have always loved birds but just recently started really paying attention to the types of birds that were in my yard. I live on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and in May of this year I was thrilled to find a pair of Eurasian Collared Doves in my front yard. Within a week there was 5 of them!!! I got some awesome pictures of them (which wasn't easy as the spook like crazy lol) They stuck around for about 3 weeks and I'm hoping they will be back next year. I would post some pics, but I just joined this forum and am not sure how to do it.

I can now confirm that one of the pair of doves that are visiting Gibsons has a collar and the other does not. I think we can assume it has to do with gender.

Both male and female adult Collared Doves have the black ring neck marking. The one without a ring would be a young one.

I have a flock of about 30 Eurasian Collared Doves that seem to have taken up residence in Bamfield BC (in my yard).

Anyone else on the island seeing large groups?

Over the past two weeks I've noticed 3 pairs of 'doves' flying about the trees in our yard and the neighbour's. After checking the identification I realized that we have Eurasian collared doves. In checking with other birders in Comox I've learned that we have a fair number of them taking up residence here. What beautiful birds!

Last year I had 3 or 4, this year, a flock of over 2 dozen. They visit my feeders daily, and roost in the trees nearby. I went to the feed store and bought "pigeon" mix, and they seem happy. I need a second job though, to afford good seed!
