This morning I noticed a large bird nest across the road from the Colony Farm Park entrance on Lougheed Hwy as I walked around the park. It is quite high up, quite large but not as big as an eagles nest. I spotted what I thought was some kind of hawk landing in it. I think I saw some white and some brown as the bird flew in. It happen so fast I was not able to get my binoculars up in time. When I walked further down to the road and looked up I was sure I saw a head popping up every so often. I watched for a while but nobody left the nest.
Any idea what kind bird has it's nest there?

It is probably a Red-tailed Hawk nest. Did the Hawk have fast wingbeats, a gray back and a long tail or could you not tell? If it did then it could have been a Cooper's Hawk.

Very impressive Isacc that you know so much. Unfortunately I had only the littlest glimps of the bird as it came it. I would say it was hawk size but do not know much else. I was wondering if someone who was a regular to the park was familar with the nest and it's owner and what they could tell about it.

I was there in February and I remember seeing 2 red-tails across the highway from the entrance. I don't know anything about the nest, but the way you are describing things, that sounds most likely.

Thanks Rob, I dropped by again and I saw a red tail hawk sitting in a tree not too far away. That is likely the occupant I would think. Thank you for your imput.

Looks like they are sitting on eggs. My wife and I were in the area and I happen to catch a changing of the guard.

I was at Colony Farm today also and the first thing I heard was the scream of a red- tail hawk. There were a pair of hawks and I think one was trying to drive the other away. Unfortunately they got behind some trees and I was not able to see what happened. But it sounds from the various reports that the nest does belong to red tail hawks. For me that was the only interesting thing I saw.

It is a Red Tailed Hawk nest. They have had the nest for years. I was at Colony Farm on the tenth and watched as one RTH was trying to drive another RTH off. They actually locked talons and were plummeting towards the earth. I took some photos but they're not that great.

Thanks Kathy for the info. I checked out your flicker site, you have taken some amazing photos, really impressive. I use the same camera, but what are you using for lenses?
