A couple of dozen Swifts were observed over Stewart BC Sept. 2. I initially thought Vaux based on their range but I am now thinking Black Swift based on the outline as their range just reaches that far north. Opinions? Thanks for the help.

I often have a tough time identifying black vs Vaux Swifts. How reliable is the forked tail feature that Sibley mentions?

Glad this discussion has come up!

Thanks Mel,

The colouration is often difficult to appreciate against the dark sky, and size is also hard to appreciate in the sky. Is the fanned tail a reliable ID feature?
