This lone grebe (at Blue Heron Beach) does not seem to clearly fit into horned or eared. I think the head width, relative to the neck, fits eared, but the forehead is not very steep and there are no light patches on the face or neck. Also the bottom bill is perhaps not slanted upwards enough at the end. The several horned grebes around look just like the pictures in the books and online of non breeding birds. Overall this seems to me to be more eared grebe. Maybe mid molt. I've never seen an eared grebe before. Thanks in advance for your help.
