If the aperture of the lens is f/4 or a lower number, it will work.

If I hadn't had the opportunity to go directly to 600mm, thanks to Christian Sasse, I'd have gone to a 300mm f/4 with 1.4x. It's pretty much the best value that you can get for $1,299.00 retail brand new. No doubt it could be less second-hand. It's sharp as a tack and well worth every penny. There's been nothing but rave-reviews for the 300/4. I certainly hope that Nikon is considering updating the lens, but considering their update for the AF-S 80-400mm VRII... An eye-busting $2700.00, any 300/4 replacement would probably be vomit-inducing price-wise.
