I want to get some video footage of great blue herons calling. It's not that rare to see or hear them do this, but it's another thing to film it. Is there times of the year/locations where they are more vocal? For example. say at the nature reserve by Chilliwack in the spring?

Great Blue Herons don't call too much unless in flight. Basically when you see a heron and they are pretty much everywhere around the lower mainland you just need to take the time to observe them and when the bird takes flight you can hear/record the call.

If you want to hear different vocalizations you need to go to colonies in the nesting season (April). You can try the colony at Stanley Park around Lost Lagoon and there is also one near the ferry jetty in Tsawwassen and at the Great Blue Heron Reserve in Chilliwack.
