Hello everyone! Since many modern camera's shoot video as well as photos, it would be great to create a video challenge as a companion to the BC Bird Photo Challenge.

2021 BC Birding Video Challenge

For this challenge, your assignment is to film each of the BC Bird species, from common birds to rare species. Shoot a 10sec - 2min in length video and upload it to YouTube. When you are ready to share, reply to this thread. Use the BBcodes (YouTube) to have your video show up in your posting (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2852)

Some criteria for the challenge:
  • Bird filmed in 2021.
  • Besides filming the bird, try to capture its song or call or location ambience!
  • Tight zoom in not necessary, capture the bird in its habitat doing something! (eg. Harrier hunting in a field)
  • Try to create a stable video, cut out the blurred or jumpy parts.
  • High end camera not necessary. Create videos with your smartphone! (birds at a feeder, duck pond, etc.)
  • Finally, tell us a bit about where the bird was filmed. Share a bit of context.
2021 BC Bird Video checklist:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
We can use a Google Spreadsheet checklist to help track which BC birds have been filmed for the challenge. If you have a Google account and would like access to help update the list (add contributed videos), just PM me and I will happily make you an editor.

On a final note, a friendly reminder that this video challenge is all in good fun. There is no prizes, just pride and recognition that you helped build the set. Let's always be mindful and considerate towards the welfare of the bird when trying to get the shot.

Have fun and Good Birding!

Kicking off the challenge with the first video of the year. A flock of Dunlin at Esquimalt Lagoon.

It was high tide and this flock was feeding on the lagoon side near the bridge. The bridge area is one of the most easily accessible shorebird locations in Greater Victoria. Over the years, many rare species have shown up here. Often, you can park and have Black Turnstones feeding right in front of you. The audio includes the peeps of the Dunlin along with the calls of brewers blackbird, black turnstone, and rock pigeon (off frame).

Sun came out today and I was able to shoot to species to add to the list.

Great Blue Heron

Bonded Pair of Eurasian Wigeons.

Both videos were shot in the afternoon of Jan 06/2021 at Panama Flats, in Victoria BC. Right now, the flats are completely flooded up to the south dike path (which is impassible at the moment). Lots of water and lots of ducks.

Had a chance this morning to go back and visit the Black Phoebe that is currently wintering in Saanich. Bird was found in the same spot as originally discovered Dec 1, 2020.

Video was shot Jan 09, 2021 @ 11:30am.

Nice videos, Kevin. I need to remind myself to shoot some ... I should have videoed the Ravens last week at Silverstar ... If I make it up again this week, I'll try to get some video of them!

There were four Northern Flickers feeding in the backyard ... obviously the weather was favorable.
lol. There is a quiet Flicker in the background ... and some other birds ... a Chickadee for one.

Hi all, here are a couple red-winged black birds seen at Portage Park yesterday. Video quality not the greatest, but it was their song that had me transfixed for several minutes. I had my 9 month old son strapped to my chest, and he seemed to enjoy the experience as much as me!

A break between rain showers allowed me to walk up to my neighbourhood birding spot at Beckwith Park to see what was happening in the pond. Nothing much today, sparrows were absent, but usual suspects were there. Filmed two of the resident wood ducks there (usually 20-30 total at any given day).

Anna's Hummingbird hanging out and keeping an eye on it's territory in North Vancouver. Sorry about the noise, but the school close by has let out for lunch. You can hear the hummingbird if you listen closely. (Also slow the playback speed down to .25 near the end)
