So, I was down at Piper Spit at Burnaby Lake today (31 August) at 4:30 P.M. when I spotted this lovely bird. I think it's a Mandarin Duck? Am I wrong? The molting plumage made me uncertain at first, but now I'm fairly sure it is.

Yep, that’s the Mandarin in his non-breeding plumage. He’s been the local celebrity at Piper Spit for a little over 2 years now. The theory is that he was dumped there from someone’s hobby farm. Just wait about another 6 weeks or so and he will be back to his spectacular breeding plumage.
Nice photos of him too.

I made this collage a while back of the various stages of his annual molt. Quite remarkable when you think about it, to transform yourself from a super model, to somewhat haggard looking, to drab & boring and then back to a super model!
