About Birding in British Columbia

Greetings, let me welcome you to Birding in British Columbia web site. I'm the System Administrator, Kevin Slagboom and I'm a long time resident of Victoria, B.C.In Natural History circles, my interests range from birding and wildlife study to botany and geology however I've been actively birding since 1995.

The Birding Victoria/Birding in British Columbia project began out of my enjoyment in Birding and the outdoors.  For my interests, the project offered me an opportunity to network and correspond with others who also enjoy the pastime. As well, I felt I could contribute to the local birding community with an information resource that supports birders. The site's purpose is to be used as an companion tool for beginners and tourists as well as a means to post notices, field notes and announcements for the BC birding community.

One of the great and wonderful things about publishing the Birding in BC and subsequent websites is that I've met so many new people.   I've had many positive comments from birder's all over the world.  It's great to help from new people and I'm always happy to assist their interests where I can.

As for my birding highlights, I've managed to add some rarer Victoria birds including a RUFF, REDWING, WOODSANDPIPER, and YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER, all Asian species very rare for N.A. Also had a great trip to Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island to see VANCOUVER ISLAND WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN and GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCH. From abroad, I've enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience to bird the Waikamoi Preserve, Maui and observe a number of endemic "endangered" birds of Hawaii and visit remnant original Hawaiian forest ('Ohi'a and Koa trees with a fern understory.) I have also travelled to the Netherlands and biked and walked through a wide range of habitats to enjoy viewing many European species.

My professional expertise includes computers, photography, web development and web site administration. For birding, I lead am a VNHS Field Trip leader, RPBC Census birder, and a volunteer beginning birding instructor.

Enjoy your wildlife experience and good birding!

Yours truly,

Kevin Slagboom
