I have a diving seabird query, without photos.
I live in Shirley BC, on the south coast of Vancouver Island, overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The bird in question is a smallish, dark, diving bird, somewhat neckless, with a blunt Roman-nose profile. Unfortunately even with my birding scope at 60x, it (sometimes, they) are too far away for visible field marks.
What interests me is its feeding behaviour. It dives down and then soon after there will be a twinkling and roiling of the sea surface as many, many small fish are pushed to the surface. Then the school of fish submerges again, the duck pops up, and its starts all over again.
I assume it is some type of scoter from the colour and profile but can find no documentation of this kind of feeding behaviour, of any bird.
Any help would be appreciated.
