I wonder if someone can identify this bird for me. I took this picture about 20 miles west of McBride, BC not far from the Fraser river in Late June 2012.

It has a sparrow look to it but I cannot match it with any in my bird books.

That is a juvenile Dark-eyed Junco. I know this because some fledged in my yard and looked just like that. If you google images for d-e junco juvenile, you will see a few pics of same plumage.

Hmmm...my Peterson and Sibley show a Dark eyed Junco as having a yellow beak and this one is decidedly dark almost black....

I see one example when I google that does seem to be close to my example

there seems to be quite a variation in coloration from the pictures I saw....do beaks turn color with age?

The bill becomes pale as the bird ages. This is a young junco.
