Hi all,

I'm going through all my pictures, and I've got some birds I'm unsure of. I'm still pretty new to birding, so some might be pretty obvious (some of the pictures aren't great and make it harder for me to identify). Thanks for your help!

Which wren?

I'm not sure of the bird on the left, the one on the right is a Surf Scoter?

Pelagic Cormorant?

Not sure of either the gull in the foreground or the two brown birds behind it.

The gull at the front...

This gull had interesting color, probably between plumage stages?

A mallard hybrid?

The duck at the front has more of an olive/yellow bill, American Black Duck?

Trumpeter or Tundra Swans? They may be a little too far to tell...

I'm assuming this is just a leucistic Junco, it had the same white patch on it's other cheek as well.

Thanks for all your help, I know there's quire a few! The pictures weren't working so I made them urls.. hope that works...

Take care,
Charlene

Hello Charlene;

Here are my thoughts on these birds :

1 - Pacific Wren ( note, small short bill and distinct colour )
2 - Golden-crowned Sparrow
3 - The bird on the right is indeed a Surf Scoter, and the bird on the left is a Horned Grebe.
4 & 5 - You are correct; Pelagic Cormorant
6 - All three are Heermann's Gulls
7 - I am going to say California Gull on this one.
8 - This is a gull that is a sub-adult. It's hard to tell which species, but I think it's a California or Ring-billed Gull.
9 - Mallard crossed with farm or feral duck.
10 - White-crowned Sparrow ( juvenile )
11 - It is a "peep" sandpiper, probably Western.
12 - This is a hard one in my opinion. Maybe Western Sandpiper, but I am not so sure. I am hoping for a second opinion.
13 - Savannah Sparrow
14 - Male Mallard molting from non-breeding to breeding plumage. I like the way you're thinking, though!
15 - Trumpeter Swans
16 - You are correct; leucistic Dark-eyed Junco.

I hope this helps, and please pardon me if I get a one incorrect.

Here are the ones that I know or have likely guesses.

2- Golden-crowned Sparrow
3- Horned Grebe, with Surf Scoter on the right.
6- Heerman's Gulls. Adult in front and two chocolate-brown immatures.
7- Probable California Gull
9- Male Mallard, possibly a hybrid, in eclipse plumage.
11- Possible Western Sandpiper
13- Savannah Sparrow
14- Mallard, possibly a hybrid, in eclipse plumage.
16- Leucistic Dark-eyed Junco

Good birding!

P.S. Didn't realize that Logan had posted until I was about to post.

I agree with Logan and Isaac on all of them. I would add though that 11 and 12 are definitely Western Sandpipers and 8 is indeed a Juvenile California Gull, the bill being too large for a Ring-billed.
